The Pedestrian's life as an avatar began with expressing personal feelings in the film, Beware of Pedestrians (1994).
Manipulating the Pedestrian puppet shows how counteracting forces in the body work together to maintain balance. This model was developed by Lisa Roberts in 1993. It was inspired by a model developed by the English osteopath S.G.J. Wernham as part of his practice, and teaching and learning, in responding to problems in person's mobility. Part of the inspiration was acknowledgement, in osteopathic practice, that every body is different, and that healing involves healthy relationship between patient and practitioner.
The puppet structure is further developed in 2019, as Cat Kutay, Michael Lynch and Lisa Roberts explore its capacity to collect, hold and share stories on virtual country between Australia and Antarctica.
