Mawson hut 2020. Animated installation: Lisa Roberts with Seeding Treaties co-creators. Music: Jason Benedek.

Story

In February 2020 this mini installation arrives at Mawson station, Antarctica. Its shape was inspired by a sea urchin skeleton and a traditional Aboriginal Australian meeting house with its skeleton of wood or whale bone.

Designed by Paul Fletcher and Lisa Roberts, it was made for people on the ice to display as part of an existing ritual, a dinner to celebrate winter solstice.

It was also made to inspire expeditioners to use it to display their own images and animations at the start of summer, to start a new ritual to welcome the whales. New images and animations made in Antarctica may then feed back into the project as it travels, physically and virtually, to inspire and inform more people to express their own experience and understanding of humans as part of nature.
